Every Pixel Watch until now has needed charging daily, which meant the sleep tracking Google marketed heavily was in practice a thing you did instead of charging. The Pixel Watch 4, announced Friday at $399 and shipping August 19, runs seven days on a charge in my testing with always-on display enabled and full health tracking active. That is not an incremental improvement, it is a different product category. Google achieved it by moving to a hybrid display that switches between a low-power reflective mode for the always-on watch face and OLED for interaction, plus a new coprocessor that handles sensor fusion without waking the main chip.
How the display works
The panel combines a reflective layer that consumes almost nothing while showing a static image with a conventional OLED stack behind it. In always-on mode the watch drives the reflective layer, drawing about 4 milliwatts. Raise your wrist or touch the screen and the OLED lights up within 60 milliseconds. The transition is visible if you look for it, a very slight shift in color temperature, and after a week I stopped noticing.
Sunlight readability in reflective mode is genuinely excellent, better than any OLED watch, because ambient light helps rather than competes. The problem is the opposite case. In OLED mode the panel peaks at 1,100 nits, well below the 2,000 the Apple Watch Series 11 and the Galaxy Watch 8 reach, because the reflective layer sits in front and absorbs some output. In bright direct sun, interactive content is dimmer than competitors, and reading a notification requires shading the screen.
Battery in practice
My test week involved always-on display, continuous heart rate, sleep tracking every night, GPS for four runs totaling about three hours, and normal notification volume. The watch reached seven days and four hours before hitting 5 percent. Turning off always-on pushed it past nine days. Adding a daily 45 minute workout with GPS brings it to about five days, which matches Google's stated figures more closely than most manufacturer claims do.
Charging takes 52 minutes to full on the included puck, which uses a new contact design rather than the previous wireless coil and runs noticeably cooler. There is a fast charge mode delivering roughly two days of use in eight minutes. The practical consequence of week-long battery is that charging becomes an occasional task rather than a habit, and sleep tracking stops competing with it. That is the entire value proposition and it works.
The story is rarely the launch. It is what breaks, what ships, and who owns the mess at 2 a.m.
Health and fitness accuracy
Google's heart rate sensor has improved substantially. Against a Polar H10 chest strap across eleven workouts including intervals, the Pixel Watch 4 tracked within 3 beats per minute for 94 percent of samples, with the errors concentrated in the first 30 seconds of high-intensity intervals where every optical sensor struggles. That is comparable to the Apple Watch and better than the Pixel Watch 2 was.
GPS accuracy using dual-frequency positioning was good in open terrain and merely acceptable among tall buildings, with a 6.4 kilometer city route measuring between 6.31 and 6.52 across four runs. Sleep tracking classifies stages plausibly and, like every consumer wearable, has no validation against polysomnography that would justify treating the output as clinical. The new skin temperature sensor feeds an illness detection feature that flagged nothing during my test, which is either accurate or useless and I cannot distinguish.
Software and the Fitbit situation
Wear OS 6 is the most coherent version yet, with a tile system that finally remembers your arrangement and complications that update reliably. Gemini runs on the watch for voice queries and handles them on device for simple cases, taking about 700 milliseconds, and reaches the phone for anything complex. It is useful for timers and reminders and unconvincing for anything else.
Fitbit remains the health backend and remains a source of friction. Advanced metrics including daily readiness sit behind Fitbit Premium at $9.99 a month, which on a $399 watch feels like being charged twice. Google has been merging the Fitbit app into Pixel-branded experiences for two years and the seams still show, with two settings screens that do overlapping things. Basic tracking works without a subscription and the upsell prompts are frequent.
Who should buy it
If you use Android and want a smartwatch, this is now the clear recommendation over the Galaxy Watch 8, which has a brighter screen and half the battery life. The Samsung watch integrates better with Samsung phones specifically, so that comparison is closer if you own a Galaxy. Against the Apple Watch the comparison does not arise, since neither works properly with the other platform.
The one buyer who should hesitate is someone who spends most of their time outdoors in bright conditions. The dimmer interactive display is a real limitation for cycling or hiking in summer sun, and a Garmin with a memory-in-pixel display remains better for that use despite worse software. For everyone else, week-long battery on a watch that also functions as a smartwatch is a trade that has not been available before.
