Power banks are commodities and most reviews of them are a waste of everyone's time. The Anker Prime 27K, at $179, earns an exception for two reasons. It outputs 250 watts total across three ports, which is enough to charge a 16 inch laptop at full speed while also handling a phone and a tablet, and it recharges itself from empty in 42 minutes using a 165 watt input. The second reason is the display, a small color screen showing per-port wattage, remaining capacity in watt-hours, temperature, and estimated time to empty. That information turns a black box into something you can reason about.

The output, tested

Port one delivers up to 140 watts through USB Power Delivery 3.1 at 28 volts, which is what a MacBook Pro 16 requests for full-speed charging. Connected alone, it held 138 watts sustained until the battery reached about 15 percent, then tapered. Adding a second device to port two dropped port one to 100 watts, which still charges a large laptop faster than most bundled adapters. With all three ports loaded the total held at 247 watts measured.

Capacity is 27,650 milliamp-hours at 3.7 volts, which is 102 watt-hours and sits just under the 100 watt-hour airline limit only if you read the labeling generously. Anker rates it at 99.75 watt-hours to stay compliant, computed at a nominal voltage the cells do not quite hold. In practice airline staff read the printed number, which says 99.75, and I carried it through four flights with no question. Anyone flying should be aware the margin is thin.

The display

A 1.5 inch color screen on the side shows each port's current draw in watts, total remaining energy, cell temperature, and a time estimate. It sounds like a gimmick and it changes how you use the thing. Seeing that a laptop is drawing 15 watts rather than 100 tells you immediately that you grabbed a cable without the right conductor rating, which is the single most common reason charging is slower than expected and which is otherwise invisible.

The screen sleeps after fifteen seconds and wakes on a button press or when a device connects. It costs a negligible amount of battery. There is a companion app that shows the same information plus charging history and lets you set a charge limit to preserve cell life, which requires an account and works without one after an initial pairing.

Recharging and the base

Forty-two minutes from empty to full requires a 165 watt input, which the included charger provides and which most people will not carry. On a 100 watt charger it takes 71 minutes. On a 30 watt phone charger it takes over four hours, which is worth knowing before a trip. Anker sells an optional dock at $59 that charges the bank through pogo pins and acts as a desktop charging station, which is convenient and unnecessary.

Heat during fast charging peaked at 44 degrees Celsius on the case, which is warm to hold and within safe range. The bank actively manages this, throttling input when temperature rises, which extended the recharge time by about four minutes in a warm room. That behavior is correct and it means the 42 minute figure assumes reasonable ambient conditions.

Build and the things that annoy

It weighs 645 grams and measures roughly the size of a thick paperback. That is heavy, and it is the physics of 100 watt-hours of lithium cells plus the circuitry to move 250 watts. The case is aluminum with a textured finish that resists fingerprints and shows scratches. There is no pass-through wireless charging, no included carrying pouch at this price, and only one of the three ports supports the full 140 watts.

The port asymmetry is the practical annoyance. Plugging a laptop into port two rather than port one caps it at 100 watts, and the ports are not labeled clearly enough to notice in a hurry. The display tells you what is happening, which is the workaround, and a clearer marking would have been free.

Whether to buy it

If you travel with a laptop and need to charge it away from an outlet, this is the best option available and the price is justified. Cheaper 100 watt-hour banks exist at around $110 and charge themselves far more slowly, which matters on a trip with short hotel stops.

If you only charge phones, this is absurd overkill and a 10,000 milliamp-hour bank at $30 serves you better and weighs a fifth as much. The category has settled into distinct tiers and buying above your tier gets you a heavier object with capability you will not use. For the specific job of keeping a laptop alive through a travel day, this does it better than anything else I have tested.

A note on longevity, since a battery is a consumable and this one costs $179. Anker rates the cells at 80 percent capacity after 800 full cycles, and the charge limit setting in the app extends that considerably by keeping the pack between 20 and 80 percent when you do not need the full range. Using that setting cuts usable capacity by roughly 40 percent day to day, which is a poor trade for a travel battery and a reasonable one for a unit that mostly sits in a bag. Anker sells replacement units rather than replacement cells and does not offer a repair path, which is the standard and disappointing answer across this category.
