A monocular waveguide display, an on-device model that works offline, and a neural wristband combine into a product that is finally useful rather than merely impressive.

Meta Ray-Ban Display review: the first glasses I did not want to take off

I have tested a lot of smart glasses and returned to my ordinary ones every time. The Meta Ray-Ban Display, which costs $799 including the neural wristband and has been in wider release since June, is the first pair I kept wearing after the review period ended. The reason is not the display, which is small, monocular, and low resolution. It is that the whole system does a handful of things well rather than many things badly: turn-by-turn walking directions, live translation captions, message triage, and a viewfinder for the camera. Everything else it declines to do, which is the discipline that previous attempts lacked.

The display and what it is for

A geometric waveguide in the right lens projects a 600 by 600 pixel image occupying about 20 degrees of field of view, positioned low and to the right so it does not sit in your line of sight. Brightness reaches 5,000 nits, which sounds enormous and is what a display needs to be legible outdoors through a tinted lens. Indoors it dims automatically and remains readable. The image is monochrome green-white, which keeps power consumption low and looks like a heads-up display rather than a screen.

The resolution supports about six lines of text or a simple arrow with a distance. That constraint is the design: you cannot read an article, watch a video, or browse anything, and Meta does not offer those. What you can do is glance at the next turn, read a translated sentence, or see who is messaging you. Each of those takes under a second and does not remove you from the conversation you are in, which is the entire difference between this and a phone.

The wristband is the actual innovation

The included band reads electromyography signals from the forearm, detecting the muscle activity that precedes finger movement. A thumb-to-index pinch selects. A pinch and lateral thumb slide scrolls. A double pinch goes back. After a twenty minute calibration it recognized my gestures with what I measured as about 97 percent accuracy across a week, including with my hand in a coat pocket, which is the use case that makes it genuinely practical in public.

This solves the input problem that has defeated every previous attempt at glasses. Voice control fails in public because talking to your glasses in a train carriage is socially impossible. Touch controls on the frame require raising your hand to your face, which looks strange and is imprecise. A subtle finger movement at your side is invisible to everyone around you. Meta acquired the technology with CTRL-labs in 2019 and it took seven years to ship, and it was worth waiting for.

The story is rarely the launch. It is what breaks, what ships, and who owns the mess at 2 a.m.

Living with it

Weight is 68 grams, which is heavier than ordinary glasses and light enough that I forgot about them after roughly an hour. Battery ran about six hours with display use and roughly eleven with the display mostly off, and the charging case adds three full charges. They look like Ray-Bans with slightly thick temples, and nobody in three weeks commented on them unprompted, which is a meaningful result for a category defined by looking conspicuous.

Walking navigation is the feature I used most and the one that changed a daily behavior. An arrow and a distance in the corner of your vision, updating as you walk, means never looking at a phone in an unfamiliar city. Live translation captions during a conversation in a language I do not speak worked well enough to conduct a transaction, with about a second of lag and occasional errors on idiom. Both run on device without a network connection, which is what makes them dependable.

The privacy problem has not been solved

There is a camera and there is an LED that lights when it records. The LED is small, and in bright daylight it is not obvious from more than a couple of meters. Meta has hardened the software so that covering the LED disables capture, which addresses deliberate tampering and does not address the fact that a person nearby may simply not notice. This was the objection to Google Glass in 2013 and it is unresolved.

The difference is normalization. Ray-Ban Meta glasses without displays have sold several million units since 2023, and camera-equipped glasses are now common enough that the social reaction has softened considerably. Whether that represents society adapting reasonably or simply giving up is a genuine question. Several European data protection authorities have open inquiries, and France's CNIL published guidance in May that stops short of restriction.

Should you buy them

If you travel, walk in cities you do not know, or regularly encounter languages you do not speak, these do those three things better than a phone and they cost $799. That is expensive and it is the first time the value proposition has been legible rather than aspirational.

If you want a general computing device on your face, this is not it and Meta is not claiming it is. The display is too small and the interaction model too narrow. The company has a fuller augmented reality product in development that has been demonstrated and not sold, and it is years from being affordable. What shipped here is a smaller, more disciplined product, and being disciplined is why it works.
