Dell retired the Precision name last year and the replacement, Pro Max, sounds like a phone. The hardware is better than the branding. The Pro Max 16 I have been testing costs $4,780 as configured, with a Core Ultra 9 285HX, an RTX 6000 Blackwell mobile with 24 gigabytes of memory, 64 gigabytes of DDR5, and a 4K OLED panel calibrated at the factory to Delta E under 1.5. Mobile workstations usually make one enormous compromise, and it is normally acoustic. This one does not. Under sustained rendering load the fans measure 44 decibels at head height, which is audible and not the hair dryer that the previous generation produced at 53.
The thermal design is the story
Dell moved to a vapor chamber spanning both the CPU and GPU with a shared fin stack and three fans instead of two. More significantly, the firmware fan curve changed philosophy. Previous Precision machines ramped aggressively to hold peak clocks, which produced excellent benchmark numbers and an unusable working environment. The Pro Max defaults to a curve that accepts about 6 percent lower sustained clocks in exchange for staying under 45 decibels, with a performance mode available for people who genuinely need every frame and have an office door.
The result in practice is a machine you can run a long Blender render on while sitting in the same room. A BMW scene render finished in 2 minutes 51 seconds in the default profile and 2 minutes 39 in performance mode, a 7 percent difference for what subjectively felt like twice the noise. Surface temperatures stayed reasonable: 41 degrees Celsius at the hottest point on the keyboard deck, which is warm on the palm rest and not uncomfortable. The underside reaches 52 degrees and this is not a lap machine.
Performance across real workloads
For 3D and visualization work the RTX 6000 mobile performs as expected, landing about 12 percent behind a desktop RTX 5080 in viewport benchmarks and considerably closer in ray tracing tasks where the memory capacity matters more than raw throughput. SPECviewperf 2025 numbers put it at the top of the mobile category, edging the Lenovo ThinkPad P16 Gen 4 in most subtests. CAD users running SolidWorks or Creo will find nothing to complain about.
For machine learning the 24 gigabytes of GPU memory is the binding constraint and it is generous for a laptop. A 24 billion parameter model in 4-bit fits comfortably with room for meaningful context, and fine-tuning a 7 billion parameter model with LoRA ran at usable speed. Anyone doing serious training will use a cluster regardless. The value here is being able to develop and debug locally on the same code path, which several researchers I know consider worth the premium over a machine with 16 gigabytes.
The story is rarely the launch. It is what breaks, what ships, and who owns the mess at 2 a.m.
The display and the OLED question
The 16 inch 3840 by 2400 OLED panel is genuinely excellent. Factory calibration held at Delta E of 1.2 average across the ColorChecker set when I measured it, covering 99 percent of DCI-P3 and 98 percent of AdobeRGB. Peak brightness hits 512 nits in HDR highlights and 388 full screen, which is bright enough for anywhere except direct sunlight. Refresh runs at 120 hertz with variable rate support.
OLED burn-in remains the caveat for a machine that will display the same toolbars eight hours a day for four years. Dell includes pixel shift and a panel refresh cycle, and warrants against burn-in for three years, which is longer than most and shorter than the expected life of a workstation. An IPS option exists at $340 less with worse color and no burn-in risk. For video and photo work the OLED is worth it. For a developer staring at an IDE, I would take the IPS and the money.
Ports, serviceability, and the small things
Port selection is what a workstation should have and what thin laptops abandoned: two Thunderbolt 5, two USB-A, HDMI 2.1, a full size SD reader, RJ45 gigabit ethernet, and a headphone jack. Charging goes through a barrel connector at 240 watts or Thunderbolt at up to 140, and the machine will run on Thunderbolt power at reduced performance, which is useful for travel.
Serviceability is good by 2026 standards. Ten captive screws release the bottom panel, both SSD slots and both memory slots are accessible, and the battery comes out with four screws and one connector. Dell publishes a service manual with photographs and sells replacement parts through its own store including the keyboard, fans, and vapor chamber. The GPU is soldered, as it is on every mobile workstation, and the wireless card is replaceable.
Who this is for
This is a machine for people whose employer buys it: engineering firms, animation studios, geoscience teams, and anyone whose work requires certified drivers for expensive software. Dell's ISV certification list covers the applications those buyers care about, and the three year onsite service contract that comes standard is the actual product for a fleet manager.
At 2.4 kilograms plus a 240 watt brick, it is not a machine you carry casually. The competition is the ThinkPad P16, which is slightly heavier with a worse display and better keyboard, and the HP ZBook Fury, which is louder and cheaper. Apple's MacBook Pro with M5 Max beats all of them on battery and quiet operation and cannot run the software many of these buyers require. Within its category, the Pro Max 16 is now the one to beat, mostly because Dell finally decided that noise is a specification.
