A redesigned hinge with a wider bend radius and a new laminated display stack makes the inner screen crease essentially invisible, at the cost of half a millimeter of thickness.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 finally kills the crease with a new hinge stack

Samsung has been promising to fix the crease on its folding phones since the first one arrived in 2019, and the Galaxy Z Fold 8, announced Thursday and shipping August 21 at $1,899, has actually done it. Under office lighting at any angle I could find, the inner display is flat. Under a raking light at about 15 degrees you can see a faint band if you know where to look. That is a different category of result from the Fold 7, where the crease was visible in normal use and felt distinctly under a fingertip. The fix combines a hinge with a larger bend radius, a new adhesive stack, and an ultra thin glass layer Samsung Display says is 22 percent more compliant.

The engineering behind the flat panel

A folding display creases because the material on the inside of the bend compresses while the outside stretches, and repeated cycling causes permanent deformation at the neutral axis. Widening the bend radius reduces strain, which is why every foldable has a droplet-shaped hinge that lets the panel curve rather than crease sharply. Samsung's new hinge moves the panel through a longer track during closure, producing an effective radius of about 3.4 millimeters against 2.6 on the Fold 7.

That alone would have made the phone thicker when closed. Samsung offset it with a hinge mechanism using a scissor linkage rather than the previous cam design, which occupies less vertical space. The display stack changed too: a new optically clear adhesive with lower modulus at the fold region, and a polyimide layer that is thinner at the center. The closed thickness ended up at 10.1 millimeters, half a millimeter more than the Fold 7, and the unfolded thickness at 4.9.

Durability, which is the real question

Samsung rates the hinge at 500,000 fold cycles, up from 400,000, which at 100 folds a day works out to nearly fourteen years and is a number nobody should take literally. The rating comes from a laboratory cycle at controlled temperature with no dust ingress. Real failures come from grit in the hinge, from opening the phone with cold hands in winter when the adhesives are stiffer, and from drops that torque the frame.

The Fold 8 adds an IP48 rating covering dust particles above one millimeter, which is an improvement over previous water-only ratings and still not a dust seal in any meaningful sense. Samsung added brushes at the hinge edges and a raised lip that keeps the panels from meeting fully when closed. Whether the crease stays invisible after two years of use is a question no review can answer at launch, and the Fold 7's crease was also modest when new.

Using it as a phone

The outer display is now 6.5 inches at a 21:9 ratio, wide enough to type on without the cramped feeling that defined early Folds. The inner display is 8.1 inches at close to square, and Samsung's app continuity handling has matured to the point where switching between them mid-task rarely loses state. Multitasking supports three apps plus floating windows, and DeX runs on an external display with genuine desktop window management.

Performance comes from a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 with 16 gigabytes of memory in all configurations, which is the right choice for a device meant to run several applications at once. Sustained load causes throttling after about twelve minutes of gaming, dropping roughly 18 percent, which is the physics of a thin device with two displays. Battery is 4,600 milliamp-hours and delivered a full day with the inner screen used heavily, about a day and a half with mostly outer screen use.

Cameras and the compromises that remain

The camera system is good and remains a step behind Samsung's slab flagship. A 50 megapixel main sensor, 12 megapixel ultrawide, and 10 megapixel 3x telephoto produce images that would have been flagship quality two years ago. The physical constraint is depth: a folding phone cannot accommodate the sensor size and lens stack the Galaxy S26 Ultra carries. Anyone buying a $1,899 phone primarily for photography is buying the wrong one.

The under-display camera on the inner screen is still visible as a slightly hazy patch when displaying white, and still produces soft video calls. Samsung improved the pixel arrangement above it and the patch is less obvious than on the Fold 7. Most people will use the cover camera for anything that matters, which raises the question of why the inner camera exists, and the answer is that video calls on the large screen would otherwise require folding the phone.

The market for this

Foldables have settled into a stable niche rather than becoming the future of phones. Counterpoint Research puts the global foldable share at about 2.4 percent of smartphone units in 2026, growing slowly. Samsung holds roughly half of that outside China, where Honor, Huawei, and Oppo have pushed thinner and cheaper designs that Samsung has not matched.

At $1,899 the Fold 8 is $100 more than its predecessor and remains a device for people who genuinely want a tablet in their pocket. The crease fix removes the most common objection from people who tried one in a store and decided it felt unfinished. Whether that converts into sales depends on price sensitivity that a $1,899 device tests severely, particularly against Honor's Magic V6 at roughly $1,400 in the markets where it is available.
