Google opened Pixel 11 preorders on Thursday, with the base model at $899 and the Pro at $1,099, both shipping August 20. The headline component is the Tensor G6, fabricated on TSMC's N2 process after Google moved away from Samsung Foundry with the G5 last year. Google claims 34 percent better performance per watt rather than a raw performance number, which is an unusually honest framing and matches what the hardware actually delivers: peak benchmark scores are perhaps 15 percent above the G5 and sustained performance and battery life improve considerably more. Tensor has never won benchmarks and Google has stopped pretending it matters.
What the process change delivers
Moving from N3E to N2 brings TSMC's nanosheet transistors, which improve drive current at lower voltage. For a chip like Tensor, where the design priority is running machine learning workloads continuously at low power rather than winning sprint benchmarks, that translates directly into the thing Pixel users have complained about since 2021. Battery life in Google's stated figures reaches 38 hours of typical use for the Pro, and early hands-on testing at a briefing supported a substantial improvement.
Thermal behavior improves alongside. The Pixel 10 Pro throttled noticeably during video recording and during sustained camera use, a complaint that has followed every Tensor generation. Google's own thermal data shows peak skin temperature dropping about 6 degrees Celsius during a 20 minute 4K recording. That is the difference between a phone that gets warm and a phone that gets uncomfortable, and it is worth more to daily use than any benchmark.
The camera changes
The Pro gets a new 50 megapixel main sensor with a larger pixel pitch and a variable aperture between f/1.6 and f/4.0, the first variable aperture in a Pixel. That enables genuine depth of field control in daylight and better handling of point light sources at night, where a wide aperture produces flare. The 5x periscope telephoto is carried over with improved stabilization. The ultrawide gains autofocus for macro.
Processing remains the reason to buy a Pixel. Google's computational stack continues to produce the most consistent results in difficult light of any phone, and the G6's larger neural section runs the pipeline faster, cutting shot-to-shot time in Night Sight from about 2.3 seconds to 1.4. The video gap against iPhone has narrowed and has not closed; Apple still produces better footage in mixed lighting and far better audio.
The story is rarely the launch. It is what breaks, what ships, and who owns the mess at 2 a.m.
The on-device model story
Gemini Nano runs on the G6 with a larger parameter count than the previous generation supported, and Google says most assistant queries now complete on device. Call screening, message summarization, and the recorder transcription all work offline, and the recorder's speaker diarization improved noticeably in a demo with four people talking over each other.
The feature Google emphasized most is a live translation mode that works during phone calls, translating both directions with the speaker's own voice characteristics preserved. It is impressive and it raises questions Google addressed only partially: the translated audio is synthesized, which means a recording of the call contains speech the person never produced. Google says translated calls carry an audible notice at the start and metadata marking the synthesis, which is more than nothing and less than a solution.
Software support and the ecosystem
Seven years of Android versions and security patches, unchanged from the Pixel 8 commitment and still the best in the industry alongside Samsung. Google has actually delivered on this for the older devices, with Pixel 8 units still receiving current Android releases, which is the evidence that matters more than the promise.
The Pixel line remains a small share of global smartphone shipments, around 1.3 percent by IDC's count, and a much larger share of influence because it defines what Android is supposed to be. Features that appear on Pixel first tend to reach Samsung and others within a year or two, which makes the Pixel worth watching regardless of whether you would buy one.
Whether to buy
If you own a Pixel 9 or older, the battery and thermal improvements alone justify the upgrade, and they are the complaints that made older Pixels frustrating. If you own a Pixel 10, the case is narrower: better battery, variable aperture, faster on-device models.
Against the competition, the Pixel wins on photography consistency and on software support, loses on sustained performance to any Snapdragon flagship, and loses on video to the iPhone. At $1,099 for the Pro it is priced against the Galaxy S26 Ultra at $1,299 and the iPhone 17 Pro at $1,099, which is competitive. The reason to buy a Pixel has always been the camera and the software, and both remain the best reasons.
One practical caution about preordering. Google's launch quality has been uneven, with the Pixel 6 shipping with modem problems that took months to resolve and the Pixel 9 requiring three updates before fingerprint reading worked properly for some users. The Tensor G6 is a new process node and a new design, which is exactly the situation where first-batch problems appear. Waiting four weeks after release costs you nothing except the preorder promotion and tells you whether the reviews at launch held up once a few million units were in daily use.
