The boring reason your next phone might cost more is not a glass redesign. It is memory. AI training and inference clusters buy high-bandwidth memory and conventional DRAM in volumes that rearrange wafer starts at Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. Phones drink from related pools. When hyperscalers sign multi-year take-or-pay deals, handset makers inherit tighter supply and uglier quotes. Counterpoint Research has already flagged higher 2026 smartphone average selling prices driven by memory. TechInsights and other tear-down shops have published iPhone 18 Pro DRAM package estimates that jump from roughly $39 on the prior generation to around $145 for a 12GB class package.
